Dear gentle reader: the second season of “Bridgerton” is here and we can practically taste Queen Charlotte’s iconic sugary confections. The new assortment of episodes will surely have steamy romances, salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown, and, of course, opulent residences.
But, though the sprawling English mansions seen on the hit Netflix show are nothing short of design goals, we can’t help but wonder what would happen if our favorite characters downsized to a tiny home. How would Simon and Daphne make room for their growing family? Which small-space hacks would Penelope Featherington and Anthony Bridgerton infuse into their tiny digs? And, of course, Queen Charlotte’s pad would need to serve up seriously regal vibes.
The good news is you don’t have to wonder any longer. In honor of the second season, we tapped Havenly’s Heather Goerzen to dream up the “Bridgerton” crew’s tiny homes.
Just because Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset (a.k.a. the Duke of Hastings) scaled down their space doesn’t mean it won’t be idyllic.
“Even if they had limited space indoors, their tiny home would still be located on a massive sprawling estate, near a river and little wooded glen,” Goerzen shares. “They’d invest in the outdoor appeal as well: landscaping roses to grow up the house, installing a patio with a small bistro table and umbrella, and dedicating storage space for picnic blankets.”
Mother Nature is special to the loved-up couple — after all, they did share their first kiss in a garden — so they’d incorporate earthy elements into this bite-sized space. (Botanical wallpaper? A rattan bassinet for their new bundle of joy? Yes, please.) Though natural elements speak to the couple’s courtship, they’ll also add tiny touches that will speak to their individual roots. Daphne will keep a portrait of her family nearby, while Simon will tend to his regal roots velvet curtains, plush bedding, and an elegant wingback chair.
So, how could Daphne and Simon fit so many “wow” moments into a teeny, tiny space? The only way to go is up!
“Their bed will likely be located in a loft with curtains to create even more privacy for their smoldering chemistry together, which is crucial in the tiny footprint,” Goerzen says. And, of course, you better believe these high walls will be covered in floating shelves, a subtle nod to their…ahem…library rendezvous.
If you haven’t finished season one, Penelope Featherington has a major surprise in store for you. But, whether you’re in on the spoiler or waiting for that big plot twist, we can all agree that Penelope will be very strategic about her small space. “There would be all sorts of secret compartments and cubbies, maybe a hidden floor board for extra storage or recesses in the stairs to stash books,” Goerzen shares. From a pull-down desk to keep up with her correspondences to double-duty decor, Penelope’s pad would definitely be shoo-in for the Small/Cool contest.
Of course, there’s more to Penelople’s tiny home than a hefty helping of small space hacks. As she breaks away from her family drama and declares her independence, Penelope will need a space that’s just as whimsical, calming, and intriguing as she is.
“Penelope would have a charming and welcoming tiny home,” Goerzen says. “Gone are the yellow hues that she so adamantly dislikes but was forced to wear. Rather, the palette of Penelope’s small abode would lean into grounded earth tones, especially greens, to complement her red curls and create a sense of warmth and comfort.”
The pièce de résistance of Pen’s pad would definitely be the blooming herb garden, which she’d cater to while she keeps an eye out for the latest scandal.
As a renowned playboy, newly-minted viscount, and the Bridgerton family’s oldest son, it’s safe to say that Anthony wears a lot of hats — literally and figuratively. So, when it comes to his bite-sized bachelor pad,, he’ll strike a happy balance between modern and English charm.
“He’s a character caught between two identities — partying playboy and devoted head of the family – and you’d see that tension in his private space,” Goerzen shares. “So it would be classic with an edge, sophisticated yet moody, scholarly with a collegiate frat boy undertone.”
Mid-century classics will sit comfortably next to tartan patterns — and some fun, masculine touches. “The small kitchen would feature beer on tap, the little dining table would flip over to reveal a poker table underneath, and there would be a humidor stashed on a floating shelf ‘library,’” she adds.
But, in true viscount fashion, Anthony will give his small space storage a stylish spin. Goerzen predicts the Brigderton bro will show off his literal hats with some stylish hooks.
Of course, no conversation about “Bridgerton” real estate is complete without discussing the queen herself. What her small space lacks in square footage, it makes up for in style. “This tiny home would be all about Charlotte,” Goerzen explains. “And if she was to rule from a diminutive ‘castle,’ it would still be lavishly decorated.”
Swathed in a luxurious palette of golds, red, and ivories, this space is literally fit for a queen. Ornate touches like Louis XVI chairs and a lofted canopy will reign supreme, while a gallery wall of ornate frames will offer a major “wow” factor. And, don’t let her footprint fool you, there will be some room for her to entertain her ladies in waiting.
“She would still need a ‘parlor’ of sorts for entertaining and reigning the social scheme, so there would be a canapé and marble side pedestal situated right next to the front door to receive guests — complete with a gold plate of delicious macarons,” Goerzen says.
As the queen said herself, “Flawless, my dear.”
