Macy’s to launch combo store prototype as it accelerates off-mall strategy

The Market by Macy’s concept offers a curated selection in roughly 28K sq. ft.

New York – This fall, Macy’s Inc. will open its first store combining its curated off-mall format and its off-price nameplate.

The first dual Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage store will open this fall in Chicagoland at 9700 South Western Ave., Evergreen Park, Ill. Customers can shop at both stores all under one roof, with Market by Macy’s located on the first floor and Backstage on the second floor.

The combination puts home merchandise in proximity to the Market by Macy’s format, a 20,000-sq.-ft. concept that debuted in early 2020. Market by Macy’s offers an edited assortment of apparel, beauty, shoes and accessories.

Macy’s has quite enough soft home merchandise, thank you

“As exciting brand extensions, Market by Macy’s and Macy’s Backstage each offer unique shopping experiences – one celebrates discovery and convenience, while the other appeals to the customer who loves the thrill of the hunt for a great value,” said Marc Mastronardi, chief stores officer at Macy’s.

The off-price Macy’s Backstage nameplate originally began as a free-standing store format, then largely shifted to shop-in-shops inside full-line Macy’s department stores. The company began opening free-standing Backstage stores again last year as part of the off-mall expansion.

The new combo concept if one of four off-mall, small-format stores Macy’s Inc. will open this fall as it revs up its non-mall presence. The other three locations will be Market by Macy’s.

“As customer preferences and buying behaviors change, we continue to evolve to deliver the experience our customers expect,” said Mastronardi.
